A long time favourite of mine that I don’t think I’ll ever tire of. The score is quite overbearing and overly melodramatic at times, but still manages to hold tension well. It’s pretty paper thin, but Kathy Bates’ performance prevents it from ever feeling that way. Her performance is one of my all-time favourites, I can’t imagine anyone else in the role but she does it perfectly. James Caan’s performance is I think underrated and overshadowed by Bates, but his grimaces of pain and ‘wtf crazy bitch’ looks ground the film and he does a good job portraying a sympathetic victim. His character is perhaps underdeveloped, but it keeps the plot tight and the focus on Annie.

The hobbling scene still makes me cringe.
