I think I discovered this film when it found its way onto the iCM Most Favourites list back in April ’11; I’d never heard of it before, didn’t know any of the cast except Faris and all I knew about it was that it was a
sci-fi science fiction comedy. Once the pub scenes started, I was madly in love with the film – and Chris O’Dowd who is just goddamn adorable – and I thought it was hilarious.
The Total Eclipse of the Heart scene is one of my favourite scenes of all time. I ended up liking that song just because I rewatched that scene constantly. I always feel like comedies are the most likely to falter on a rewatch because you get to know the jokes and and it begins to fall flat, but for me it’s still hilarious. I always thought the romantic subplot with Faris and the stuff with Milly were the only weak points and I still feel that way but they feel less jarring now.
It’s well paced, the jokes are funny, the cast is likable, the music is great. It’s nothing particularly special technical-wise, but those things rarely matter in a comedy, and the content shines enough for it not to matter at all.
